to answer the following…
What does Success in life mean to you?
For me, it means living a life true to my heart. That sounds like some trite hallmark graduation card….doesn’t it? A nice sentiment, but not all that practical, or easy to attain.
I was a pleaser. Can any of you relate? Somewhere along the way, I had adopted beliefs which ensured I would be living everyone else’s hearts desire. Born in to a Roman Catholic family, we went to church every Sunday. My parents voted liberal, worked hard, saved enough to send their 3 daughters to University, and then saved enough to give each of us the weddings we wanted. My mother doted on my father, would never entertain the thought of divorce, and put everyone else’s needs above her own.
Most of us become our parents. Mostly because it’s too hard to adopt something new, and indoctrinated beliefs can be hard to question. But, what happens when you wake up one day with the stark ‘heart-based’ realization….“I’m living someone else’s life!!!”
My mother had cared for my ailing father for many years. When he passed away, she finally realized she wasn’t well. A diagnosis of cancer and a battle she lost, meant she joined my father a mere 2 years later. Grief became the catalyst for some real heart and soul searching. I began to question:
“Is this all there is?”…”What am I missing?“.
